Which treats are suitable for training?Updated 13 days ago

Training your dog is a rewarding experience, and choosing the right treats can make it even more effective and enjoyable. While some general guidelines apply, every dog is different, so what counts as a “high-value” treat will vary from dog to dog. High-value treats are those that your dog finds especially enticing and should be easy to consume quickly to maintain focus during training sessions.

To find out what your dog considers high-value, try offering 3–4 different treats on a plate at the same time and watch the order in which your dog eats them. This can help you identify their preferences, from highest to lowest value.

During a training session, having a variety of treats on hand allows you to match the value of the reward to the difficulty of the task or keep your dog motivated as they tire. You can also use lower-value treats early in the session and gradually move to higher-value options as the session progresses or your dog starts to check out.

When preparing for training, it’s also helpful to bring more than one type of treat to keep things varied and exciting for your dog. Kazoo offers a range of natural, air-dried treats that are perfect for training, including:

  • Kazoo Chicken Jerky
  • Kazoo Beef Lung
  • Kazoo Lamb Lung
  • Kazoo Kangaroo Sausage
  • Kazoo Liver Chips (Note: Due to their richness, feed in moderation to avoid digestive upset.)

Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake to maintain a balanced diet. Break larger treats into smaller pieces to manage portions and ensure your dog stays engaged without overindulging. Always supervise your dog while they’re eating treats and have fresh water available.

By selecting the right treats and understanding your dog’s preferences, you can create a positive training experience that keeps your dog motivated, happy, and healthy.
