As hermit crabs grow, they will shed their exoskeleton. 

This can sometimes look like your hermit crab has come out of its shell as it removes its exoskeleton. But if you look closely inside their shell, you will see a pink hermit crab still inside. It is best to leave your pet hermit crab alone during this molting process and allow a couple of weeks for the process to complete, so not to cause them any stress.

If your hermit crab has been buried for some weeks, it’s best to assume he/she is molting.
